Dear Diary Entry 120
Wolves Cub Now A Goal-Scoring Veteran
Saturday, September 4: Remember Leon Clarke? The Wolverhampton-born former Molineux youngster has recently joined Bristol Rovers seven months on from his 36th birthday and obliged by scoring the only goal on his debut at home to Crawley this afternoon. Remarkably, his arrival in League Two is his 22nd change of club, including temporary moves and upgrades to permanent deals.
Wednesday, September 9: Enjoyed having a coffee (or two) with Richard Skirrow and John Lalley and discussing all matters Wolves…..and a few besides, such as Test and county cricket. The two had also bumped into each other outside Molineux following the game against Manchester United at the end of last month.
Sunday, September 11: Great to hear that proceeds from the recent Oxley Park golf day which we attended and reported on climbed to a bumper £6,200. Well done to all of the paying guests who revelled in the company of a handsome array of former Wolves players on and off the pitch and did so much for the usual worthy causes. Several of the same Molineux favourites will be back on the course in their annual visit to the lovely Wrottesley Park par-three course next Sunday.
Saturday, September 18: What a seriously good start Morgan Gibbs-White had made on loan at Sheffield United, not only impressing but also scoring and assisting. He netted in his first two games for the Blades and helped keep their dramatic Championship revival going today by playing a starring role in the win at Hull. Good luck to him after his injury-affected spell with Swansea last season.
Tuesday, September 21: Caught up on some Match of the Day highlights and heard the BBC interviewer tell Watford’s Ben Foster that he was still nowhere near the oldest Premier League keeper despite having come in for the win at Norwich at the weekend at the age of 38. The man at the mic reminded him that John Burridge had been 43 years and four months old when he last played for Manchester City in the rebranded top flight in the mid-1990s.
Wednesday, September 22: Found Molineux a happier place at full-time tonight than it had been at the end of Wolves’ defeat there against Brentford on Saturday. Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of Spurs was disappointing but the performance was bright and came with a good fightback from 2-0 down. Now to build on this…..
Monday, September 27: Belatedly told Les Wilson I had seen him on some footage among all the tributes to Jimmy Greaves that were broadcast on TV before the West Ham v Manchester United game last weekend. I assumed the clip of him in an all gold kit and the no 10 shirt was in the club’s 1969 FA Cup tie at White Hart Lane judging by the fact Phil Parkes, Derek Parkin and Mike Bailey were also visible.
Saturday, October 2: Was sorry to just miss seeing Kenny Hibbitt in the worldwide lounge in the Steve Bull Stand before today’s victory over Newcastle. Then I was hugely flattered to see Facebook photos of him looking at and even signing copies of my new book, A Wolves 1970s Scrapbook. I know he would love it……he and his contemporaries are featured in it over and over and over.
