Pain Of Wayne

Sending-Off Means This Could Be The End

There could have been a better epitaph than this for Wayne Hennessey. Two late Iranian goals and now three days to mull over the possibility that his time in international football might have been ended by the red card brandished by a Guatemalan referee.

Still In The News!

Stunning Defeat That Sent Shockwaves Round The Globe

England v USA at the World Cup finals – hopefully a whole new script will be written in the Al Bayt Stadium tonight. For now, though, Belo Horizonte in 1950 still casts a haunting shadow over the fixture as far as supporters on this side of the Atlantic are concerned.

Daley Express Might Have Been Unleashed

Winger Was In Shake-Up For Robson Farewell

Italia 90 was all about Steve Bull as far as Wolves fans are concerned but there is considerable secondary interest in the tournament in retrospect if we are prepared to look for it. Three of the striker’s fellow squad members served later at Molineux, as did two members of the Republic of Ireland party who prospered under Jack Charlton.

Les Lights The Touchpaper

Countdown On Among Excited Canadians

Feeling indifferent about a major tournament that is taking place in our season? Not happy about the choice of location? If the answer to the above questions is ‘yes’, you will by no means be alone. But stimulus has come our way, as it so often does, from a very good friend on the other side of the Atlantic.

Tales From The Couch

Toby Adds To The Party Spirit

Toby Andersen’s healing fingers and palms – among the key ingredients behind the Molineux scenes around 50 years ago – have been busy once more; this time shaking the hands of many of the players he was paid to nurse back to fitness. The early 1970s Wolves physio was the special guest at a late autumn get-together of around a dozen members of the squad he used to know so well.

Rob Back In Familiar Routine

Kelly Savours Welcome Victory

Rob Kelly has made a winning return to Football League management a year and a half on from his last taste of it. The 57-year-old was thrust into caretaker control at Championship newcomers Wigan following the shock sacking of his boss Leam Richardson on Thursday.

Together Again – And Flying High

Tracksuited Trio On The Up

In this week of rising managerial anticipation at Molineux, how’s this for a pleasing story from the dug-out several divisions lower? Kevin Foley missed out on a possible route into coaching at League One level in May when Rob Edwards, the man who had taken him to Forest Green on an informal basis mid-way through last season, upped sticks and joined Watford.

Following A Familiar Pattern

Wolves Still Looking To Foreign Fields

For almost 70 years, Wolves appointed only English managers. Now, for a decade and a half, they have exclusively installed men either born beyond our border or at least those who pinned their colours to another flag. The football affiliations of the club’s bosses since Glenn Hoddle departed in the summer of 2006 makes increasingly cosmopolitan reading – Ireland, Norway, Wales, Wales, Italy, Scotland, Portugal, Portugal and now Spain.

A Notable Throw Of The Dice

Gift Of Goals Guaranteed ‘Fans Favourite’ Status

“I didn’t like taking throw-ins at Highbury. There was so little room between the touchline and the step down to the terraces. I liked a few steps before my throw. It was okay for Malcom Macdonald, who threw from a standing start.” Bobby Woodruff was talking of the battle for who could take the longest throw-in. Older Wolves supporters will recall the thrill on the Molineux terraces from 1964 to 1965-66 when the Wiltshire man hurled missiles into the penalty area, often with devastating effect on the opposition defence.

Dear Diary Entry 133

A Mark In Favour Of The Other Lot!

Wednesday, October 5: Emailed Mark Burke to make sure he had seen the super photo of him in issue 78 of Backpass. I wasn’t sure he was old enough to be a reader of a nostalgia magazine, even one as outstanding as this, but he had seen it. The picture left no-one in any doubts that his main allegiances lie with his boyhood heroes Villa!
