Precious Insight Into Talent-Spotters Of Yesteryear
An article in the Daily Express on August 23, 1960 was headlined “On Parade. The men who make Wolves”. The piece was accompanied by a photo showing the scouts from up and down the British Isles credited with bringing the raw talent to Molineux. Dead centre, of course – and surprisingly the only one not looking at the camera (maybe Stan Cullis was lurking!) – was George Noakes. Cited as the only full-timer and the ‘master-spotter’ of the Black Country, Wanderers’ chief scout was quoted as saying: “Some (of our scouts) are on retainers, the rest just get their expenses and we look after them when they find a player.”
