Bert Feature Coming Up

Q & A Second Instalment This Week

'The Cat' in caricature - but facing him wasn't much fun.

John Richards is to post the fruits of his long talk-in with Wolves legend Bert Williams on this site in the next couple of days.

The former Molineux record scorer followed up his appearance as the first subject in our new Q & A area with a change of role.

He switched from interviewee to interviewer when he went to visit the club’s best all-time goalkeeper at his home in Shifnal.

Richards took with him questions submitted by Wolves Heroes readers as well as some of his own and reports back that the 90-year-old was in fine form.

“It is always a pleasure and an education to be in Bert’s company and this was no exception,” he said.

“His recall of his days as a Wolves and England player is still very good and I found his answers extremely interesting.

“As a player from one generation given the chance to interview a player from an older one, I found the comparison between our schedules and routines very illuminating.

“We had some great days in the 1970s and early 1980s but have to remember that the team Bert was part of had such huge success in the League as well.

“It was good to gain some new insight into a few of the things that made that team tick.”

Wolves Heroes' John Richards takes a screen break to sign a 1980 League Cup celebrations photo.

Richards, now the co-owner of this website and also the club’s one-time managing director, didn’t just confine the conversation to on-field and training-ground matters.

“I was keen to know more about the preparation for games under Stan Cullis as well as about Bert’s life since football,” he added.

“Obviously, he was a man ahead of his time in the business sense – he was as successful out of the game as he was in it.”
