Getting Better And Better

Tuesday, April 2: Another epic Molineux night, with Manchester United brought down for the second time here in a few weeks. These are happy, happy Wolves days – witnessed once more by Old Trafford European Cup hero Pat Crerand, who no doubt remembers a very different ground with 50,000-plus attendances. He can’t help but be impressed, though, by the impact the present-day Wolves are having on the Premier League.

Sunday, April 7: It felt a bit odd to see Kenny Jackett laughing and in obviously good spirits as he was interviewed on the edge of the Wembley pitch after Wolves’ sickening defeat against Watford this afternoon. But we must remember that he was a Hornets player for a decade, later managed them before his three years as Molineux boss and was born in the town. He has fond fresh memories of the national stadium, too, after overseeing Portsmouth’s victory over Sunderland there last weekend in the Checkatrade Trophy final.

Thursday, April 11: Enjoyed dropping by at Shrewsbury’s training ground to say a quick hello to Sam Ricketts, David Edwards and Scott Golbourne – and get David to sign my copy of the excellent Living My Dream book he brought out last year. Spirits seemed high there, no doubt more so after their major steps towards League One survival in recent weeks.

Sunday, April 14: Was delighted to please Bertie Lutton’s Wolverhampton-based son, Lee, by sending him a picture I found of his dad scoring against Arsenal at Molineux back in 1969. He said he had been looking for it for years. Also attached one of him signing for Brighton in 1971.

Friday, April 19: How lovely it is to see Bright Enobakhare scoring regularly for his loan club Coventry. He has looked a good player for Wolves but one lacking in goals – the commodity he has added to his game with the Sky Blues. Last night’s strike against Bradford was his sixth of the season after he also netted in last weekend’s spectacular 5-4 win at Sunderland.

Saturday, April 20: More disappointment for Wolves after their FA Cup exit and the League defeat at Southampton with a frustrating deadlock at home to Brighton. Rarely has Molineux witnessed a more one-sided game in terms of goal attempts but the club who relegated Wolves both in 1985 and 2013 survived with a point and remain favourites to escape the drop at the expense of Cardiff. Kevin Foley, Andy Thompson and Mel Eves were among the former players there to witness it.

Wednesday, April 24: A stunning Molineux first half tonight as Arsenal were well and truly put to the sword. Three goals in quick succession had Wolves supporters in dreamland, setting up a first home win over the Gunners in 40 years. In the press box, Chris Iwelumo took his turn to join the ‘usual suspects’.

Thursday, April 25: Quite a coincidence! Just as I was looking at an email from Les Wilson containing a photo of Peter Knowles, along came the man himself, walking past the window of the Wolverhampton coffee shop I was seated in. It’s 50 years this September since Peter walked away from Wolves and the game but he still looks very fit and well. Les will be interested in this sighting……in faraway Vancouver, he loves to hear any news of his former Molineux team-mates.
