Canada Calling

Wednesday, November 6: Enjoyed taking a phone call from Les Wilson in Vancouver after he was reunited, by email, with a playing colleague of his from the 1960s. Jim Barron phoned us yesterday, asking to be put in touch, as he and his partner are heading for Canada’s west coast later this month. Les is always up for such reunions and fondly remembers their time together at Molineux in the mid-1960s.

Thursday, November 7: Looking forward to having a read of Training With Wolves, Tim Gibbons’ new book on the late former Molineux trainer Jack Davies, which I received a copy of at tonight’s Europa League tie against Slovan Bratislava. Jack lived through some momentous days at the club and would have loved seeing the outstanding football supporters are relishing now.

Sunday, November 10: Parked again on the Wednesfield side of the city for today’s crackling local derby victory over Villa and enjoyed the walk in, as I had in the company of the Express & Star’s John Lalley three nights ago. It was some atmosphere today and another fine result, which has Molineux eyes very much looking upwards rather than at the teams near the basement.

Friday, November 15: Our visit to see Mick Kearns last week has had a pleasing spin-off. His recognition of Alun Evans’s signature in the Walsall book we asked him to sign led to mention of the former Molineux reserve Brian Thompson, who was a team-mate of Mick’s at Oxford and a teenage friend of Alun’s at Wolves. We were happy to do the rest by ensuring Messrs Kearns and Thompson can now catch up on the events of the last few decades, with Brian still resident near Sydney.

Tuesday, November 19: Another link renewed. We heard recently from a David Organ, who said he had been good pals in the past with 1980s midfielder Matt Forman. With permission, we handed over the relevant contact information and learned that David was from Tewkesbury and the chef at the Formans’ wedding.

Tuesday, November 26: It was bound to happen – we had been waiting all month for someone to approach us on this subject. Friday is the 50th anniversary of Wolves’ 1-0 home win over Sunderland that became the first English match to be televised live in Scandinavia. As expected, we duly received a request – from a major Norwegian newspaper – who wanted to speak to that 1969 match-winner Hugh Curran and we were happy to provide the introductions as ever.

Friday, November 29: Was delighted to provide some Chelsea contact details for Robbie Dennison as a follow-up to the reunion he had with Frank Lampard at Molineux a few weeks ago. The two former Swansea team-mates were photographed in the Molineux tunnel by David Bagnall…….now the wizard of the wing wants the picture signed and asked us where he should send it for Lampard’s attention.

Sunday, December 1: Great to share a lift to Wolves’ home draw against Sheffield United today with the club’s long-time former commercial manager Gary Leaver, who remains such an avid home and away fan that he was in Portugal for the tie with Sporting Braga in midweek. Along with Andy Thompson and Mel Eves, other former players in attendance in the press box were Ray Houghton, Ian Dowie and Blades hero Keith Edwards, who once had a trial at Wolves.
