Wayne Reign Is On Borrowed Time

David Edwards is edging towards another minor slice of Molineux history after his recent accomplishment of an appearance landmark at club level.

The goal-scoring midfielder is in line to this season overtake his long-time colleague Wayne Hennessey and become the man to have played more Wales games than anyone else while on Wolves’ books.

By going on for Joe Ledley for the final six minutes of last night’s World Cup qualifying draw with Serbia, Edwards won his 38th international cap, all but the first two of them picked up while with his present employers.

And that leaves him only three behind Hennessey, who had 41 senior outings for the country before joining Crystal Palace on the last day of January, 2014.

Edwards, 30, also faced Austria and Georgia earlier this season and has become the Molineux man of the moment, scoring in each of the last two games and being responsible for three of his club’s last five goals.

He ate up more of the ground between Hennessey and himself by playing the first three matches of Wales’s historic Euro 16 campaign in France in the summer.

Domestically, he has just moved into the top 40 all-time Wolves leading appearance makers, his tally of 271 League and cup games for the club leaving him one behind Karl Henry.

Hennessey, for his part, has now won 65 caps and stands equal 14th with Andrew Melville in his country’s outings list.

Still on top of the pile is Neville Southall (92) while a third keeper, former Wolves man Paul Jones, is 34th after playing 50 internationals.

Among those in between is former Molineux boss Dean Saunders, whose 75 Wales games brought him 22 goals and leaves him in fifth place.

Sam Ricketts and Carl Robinson are side by side in equal 28th spot in the roster with 52 appearances.

Wales next face the Republic of Ireland in their qualifying group, that March clash being followed three months later by the return game against Serbia.
