Publisher’s Pride At Superb End Product

Advance copies of the unique They Wore The Shirt book have arrived in the West Midlands – and project mastermind Steve Plant has declared himself thrilled at what he has seen.

The book is still more than three weeks away from publication early in October but will be off the presses very soon and heading for Molineux and beyond.

“I am delighted beyond words,” Plant said today at a meeting in the Billy Wright Stand of the ‘squad’ who have helped him put it together.

“I knew it looked fantastic on screen but to actually handle it, turn the pages and be reminded what a weighty project it is has been a wonderful experience.

“I am new to all this and could not have wished for a better end result when we set out on the best part of a year ago.

“I can’t wait now for the book to go out on sale and to hear what Wolves supporters think of it because nothing like this has ever been done on the club before – I really do think it is filling a gap on the book shelves.”

They Wore The Shirt stretches to a formidable 256 pages and is one of the biggest Wolves books ever produced, with colour from front cover to last.

It fully indulges the publisher’s passion for the famous gold and black, with his huge and valuable collection of the club’s shirts forming a backcloth for an anecdotal walk through Wanderers history.

His friendship with the players, past and present, is also clearly evident, with favourites from the early 1970s up to the modern day photographed in the relevant jerseys – and sometimes in those from different eras.

“The lads know me from the training ground and various functions and have been very patient over the years with signing things for me,” he added.

“They have been absolutely brilliant with giving their time for this project and have pledged to carry on doing so where they can…..they know it is all for a fantastic cause.”

The lifelong Wolves fan embarked on this expansive coffee table hardback publication in memory of his father, whose bravery in the face of the illness that took his life inspired him to come up with such a tribute.

The words of dedication at the front are moving in the extreme and every penny of the profits are to go to the cancer unit of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
