Former Wolves players have continued to help local and national charities through their efforts on the golf course over the past fortnight.

After the huge success of the charity day at Oxley Park the Friday before last, eight of them appeared at the annual autumn event staged at Wrottesley Park.

‘Usual suspects’ Phil Parkes, John McAlle, Geoff Palmer, Steve Daley, Colin Brazier, Phil Nicholls and Dale Rudge were delighted to be joined at the lovely par-three course by Paul Jones, the midfielder who is better known from his time at Walsall before having a 15-game spell at Molineux during the Graham Turner era.

And we found Paul keen to talk on all matters gold and black as he and his family are Wolves supporters and regular watchers of matches there.

He didn’t have to look far around the field for familiar faces, having been a Fellows Park team-mate in the 1980s with Brazier, whose team were victorious three days ago, and Daley.

Jones also still goes to many Walsall and Stoke home matches in his work as a provider of statistics from the press box.

“We always have a great afternoon with the Wolves lads and were full to capacity again this time,” said Wrottesley secretary Joe Owen.

“Someone said this was the 12th year we had hosted the competition and we so often seem to be blessed with good weather when they come.

“As a result of the day, we will be making a donation to Compton Hospice but it won’t be until after one or two other events in the coming weeks.”

Owen had a successful and long career as a forward in non-League football and also lent a willing extra pair of hands to Wolves in their dark days of the mid-1980s.

He will be interested to know that the Wolves Former Players Association golf day at Oxley is being brought forward next year to a late-August slot.

The bumper event there 12 days ago – also attended and reported on by Wolves Heroes – is believed to have raised about £6,000, which is likely to be divided between Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the cancer care organisation bearing the name of Phil Parkes’s late wife, Maureen.
