Mike Not Going Hungary

Keane Appointed But Door Remains Closed For Stowell

The precocious youngster who dazzled us all more than a quarter of a century ago.

Robbie Keane’s appointment as manager of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros will not lead to another overseas posting for Mike Stowell.

The Irishman’s unveiling as successor to Dutchman Pascal Jansen two days ago had raised hopes that the former Wolves duo might reunite in Budapest.

But we understand he has the freedom to take only one coach  with him this time after being allowed to hand-pick a bigger backroom team when he set out two summers ago on his title-winning journey with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

So he will be accompanied only by his assistant, Rory Delap, as well as by the former Middlesbrough analyst Phil Hudson, with a goalkeeper coach already in situ.

Stowell had retained an open mind on whether or not his next job might be with his late-1990s Molineux team-mate.

The two, with Delap, Hudson and coach Dave Sarachan, worked with great success in Tel Aviv, where they inspired the winning of the Israeli top flight and league cup as well as unlikely progress to the last 16 of the Europa Conference League.

Now Keane joins a club sitting second in the Hungarian table after winning the title by a distance last season. They are also in the Europa League and due to face Eintracht Frankfurt and AZ Alkmaar later this month.

Celebrations Tel Aviv-style for Mike Stowell, Robbie Keane and friends last spring

The 44-year-old, who was at the Wolves v Bournemouth game at the end of November, has linked up with his new squad in Spain this week. They have a training camp there as the Hungarian winter break is drawing towards a close.

Our research has informed us that Rob Kelly – a key part of the process that brought Keane to Molineux in the mid-1990s – will also soon be enjoying the Mediterranean’s warmer weather.

He has reported back for duty with Aarhus in the last few hours, with Uwe Rosler’s squad heading for Marbella on Saturday week for a fortnight-long training camp and three friendlies.

Aarhus also play a friendly in Denmark against Copenhagen before their Superliga programme resumes on February 16 after a break of arond two and a half months.
