Are Wolves Finding Their Feet?

This time last year, we published a contemporary piece, submitted by one of our friends in the gambling industry. Bruce West now returns with a reflection on the season so far and a look at what the rest of October might have in store at Molineux….

After a rather mish-mash start to the season, Wolves look to have finally found their feet a little – with two convincing performances under their belts in the last two games. Now they have the chance to get themselves back into the play-off places when the Championship programme resumes.

International breaks can be a bit of a nuisance and surely Kenny Jackett would have thrived on trying to continue the form the club were in going into the break.

The head coach will hope that, by the time of the visit to Derby next weekend, the form generated by the victories over Fulham and Huddersfield will not have gone out of the window.

The flip side, of course, to these two-week breaks are that when you are the League’s whipping boys, it gives you a change from the usual Saturday night glumness after another defeat.

It may be far too early to say the next four or five games could define Wolves’ season but take a glance at the fixture list and you start to realise it could be very important.

Derby have also been in a good run of form after a strange start to the season. They were the early-season draw specialists but a loss at home to Leeds seemed to wake up the talent their squad have. Since then, they have won four out of the last five games – and the other was a draw.

Wolves might have wanted a better time to travel to a ground where they lost 5-0 last autumn but it is an attractive clash and there has been some interesting promotion odds development in recent weeks. Wolves have now been shortened to 7/1 to reach the promised land according to bookmakers Coral.

After the East Midlands v West Midlands clash, Wolves host Brentford, who have struggled so far following their changes of management and currently stand just outside the relegation zone.

But our next two opponents after that, like Derby, are in superb form and look the real deal as promotion contenders.

Middlesbrough, who follow Brentford to Molineux, are second with 20 points and Birmingham, Wolves’ destination for the final game of the month, are two places and only two points worse off.

It is tight at the top end of the Championship and obviously Wolves hope to have established themselves as promotion contenders by the end of the month despite this challenging run.
