That Caps It All!

More Return From Rovers – And A Date On The Film Set

Bobby Gould signs Keith Curle at Eastville during his time as Bristol Rovers manager.

We hadn’t expected to be ‘revisiting’ the Gould family on this website quite so soon – but, hey, we have to go where the news is!

Since we wrote about them at length just over a fortnight ago, they have created more headlines and talking points in hectic lives that quite literally stretch right across the world.

Bobby and wife Marge depart late this month for another winter’s hibernation in New Zealand, armed with a newly-acquired keepsake from his career and yet more memories.

So here’s the summary: He received a cap commemorating his career as a player (and later a manager) at Bristol Rovers and stepped in as interviewee on a programme about Vinnie Jones that is to be shown in the coming weeks. Oh….and they also now have a dog.

“The filming was at a sandwich bar in Bristol,” Bobby said. “There were so many crew that the guy had to close it to other customers. They sent a car for me and I felt they were doing it right.

“When we were together, I always called him Vincent and was asked recently whether I would speak on camera about our time together at Wimbledon, which was always eventful and colourful.

“Sam Hammam flew in as well and one or two others identified as being close to him in his football days have also been interviewed. He has obviously had a brilliant career in films and I said I was glad to be included if it helped.”

Jones was a controversial part of the Wimbledon team who won the FA Cup in 1988, their Wembley victory over hot favourites Liverpool also being part-masterminded by Wolverhampton-born coach Don Howe.

The midfielder later fell out with Gould when he was dropped from the Wales team, so we can only hope this project confirms a thaw between the two at a time when Britain’s most famous former hod carrier divides his time, for filming purposes, between West Sussex and Los Angeles.

And, as Jones contemplates further stardom in Tinseltown, one of his Plough Lane managers will be packing his bags ready for another trip Down Under, this time to meet both of his sons.

Bobby and wife Marge after he found himself the centre of attention with Bristol Rovers supporters last week.

As well as spending time with youngest son Jonathan, who is now coaching in Auckland, Bobby and wife Marge plan to link up with Richard – two years younger and the chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

England’s tour of New Zealand this winter has created the potential for a meet-up a long way from home, with the long-time former Surrey chief exec currently in Dubai for the women’s T20 World Cup.

Gould Snr will have something new to shield his eyes from the sun, having been invited out to lunch by Bristol Rovers Supporters Club at a West Country golf club last week and presented with a cap and certificate. He was the 446th man to play for the club and later went on to manage them.

“I played for City as well in between my two Wolves spells but usually have to go there in disguise as I am seen much more in this area as a Rovers man!” he added.

*The dog mentioned above is border terrier Archie, who takes Bob for a three-mile walk most days and accompanies him during coffee-shop refuelling stops.
