A Heavyweight Addition

Molineux Set For Northants Knees-Up

It is, by any stretch of the imagination, a remarkable story; the rise of a Wolves supporters’ club launched by three men in a pub in a market town 60 miles from Molin2eux.

The expanded group have been making a name for themselves ever since – an extremely long name, as it happens, although the Northamptonshire-based Daventry Dun Cow Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club Supporters Club are often known instead as DDCWWFCSC.

Now their reputation has been underlined even further through the publication marking their first 50 years. Not any old book either but one containing 806 pages, costing £30 and weighing in at 7lb 10oz.

It’s a staggering ‘spec’ and a labour of love surely well beyond the imagination of the ambitious trio as they emerged as founder members on October 3, 1975, a few days before goals by Kenny Hibbitt (2), John Richards (2) and Willie Carr put the Blades of Sheffield United to the sword at Molineux.

Chris Cox, amazingly, has been chairman throughout those 50 years. Richard Meacock remains as president despite living in Australia since around 1980 and the name of Frank Hobbs, who died in 2021, lives on as a result of his numerous decades of dedication at the same time to Daventry Town that led to a stand there being named after him.

That makes the club the second oldest, after London Wolves, of all those linked to Molineux and they have a roll of honour in keeping with that status.

They have more than a dozen high-profile honorary members and contributions to the book came from John Richards, who also wrote the foreword, Graham Turner, Matt Murray, Willie Carr, Neil Emblen, John Humphrey, Don Goodman, Rob Edwards, Kevin Foley, Richard Skirrow and John Gough.

Other honorary members are Mike Bailey, who once refereed a Daventry Wolves v London Wolves football match, Kevin Cooper and Jack Price.

Wolves have always been well represented at DDCWWFCSC events, the first of which was a dinner the night after the title and relegation decider against Liverpool in May, 1976. Bill McGarry, Sammy Chung, Graham Hawkins, Mark McGhee, Colin Lee, Kenny Jackett and Mick McCarthy are among the ex-managers who have attended their functions.

In addition, Graham Turner took his promotion-bound squad to eat with the Daventry members at the Dun Cow following a Sunday lunchtime Third Division game at nearby Northampton in December, 1988.

Long-time Daventry Wolves chairman Chris Cox with his good friend, Mike Bailey.

The dinner to mark the big half century is being held at Molineux on Saturday, October 4, when Richards, Kenny Hibbitt, Turner and McGhee are due to be among the guests. Goodman and Murray are also hoping to attend subject to their Sky commitments.

The book has been compiled by Cox and his good friend, Black Country-based Clive Corbett, who has been a member since 1997.

“We are hoping to pick up a few lapsed members for the dinner as it is such a major celebration,” Cox said. “Neither Clive or myself took a penny in compiling the book and £5 of the £30 cover price is going to Cancer Research.”

Chris can be contacted at ddcwwfcsc@hotmail.co.uk about book purchases or dinner places.
