A New Book To Stir The Old Gold Senses

208 Quality Pages Just Oozing Nostalgia

On the book shelves now.

We at Wolves Heroes are delighted to have our fingerprints all over a dramatic new book chronicling the club’s long and thrilling history.

David Instone is the proud author of ‘When Football Was Football: Wolves’ – subtitled ‘a nostalgic look at a century of the club’ – with John Richards as writer of the foreword.

The publication is part of a growing library produced in conjunction with the Daily Mirror and Mirrorpix. Their magnificent photo archive in Watford forms the backbone of our efforts.

And we can promise Wolves supporters some stirring, even stunning images to pore over in the 208 pages of this title, which isn’t necessarily guaranteed to fit through letter-boxes!

It measures up at a formidable 25cm x 25cm and is a hard-back of high quality on glossy pages, the last five decades or so being covered largely in colour.

Thanks to the expertise of staff both at the Mirror and Haynes Publishing, the presentation is quite something. “The photos really leap off the page,” said a spokesman. “The book’s dimensions mean we can use many pictures over a full page and, in quite a few cases, across a double page. We think it’s a book that really is hard to put down.”

Among our favourite images are the many previously unseen ones from the 1950s glory years, the snaps dusted off from before and after the club’s promotion under Ronnie Allen in 1967 and those that captured the remarkable Peter Knowles story.

Check out, also, the ones of the players off duty…..playing cricket in the dressing room, trying on wigs in a department store, The Doog grooming himself before kick-off and a certain other striker enjoying a tender moment with the love of his life at an otherwise deserted Molineux.

Phil Parkes.....these hands were made for signing.

Two of the stars featured strongly in the publication have been enlisted to support its launch this week. Phil Parkes and Dave Wagstaffe will be in the Wolverhampton branch of Waterstone’s this Saturday (March 24) from 11am to about 2pm to autograph copies that will also be author-signed. The duo will chat to fans at the store in Victoria Street and pose for photos.

For further details on where the book (price £18.99) is available, please get in touch by emailing info@wolvesheroes.com or ringing 07734-440095.

The Daily Mirror, with whom we have also struck a deal for the provision of content for our Big Picture area for the next month or so, and Haynes Publishing have already brought out excellent WFWF titles on a host of clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle.
