Nostalgia Publication A Winner Again

A two-page feature on Peter Knowles heads up the considerable Wolves interest in the latest issue of the Backpass retro magazine.

The talent that football dramatically lost more than half a century ago has given precious few interviews over the decades but agreed to speak at length to WCR, the radio station based just off the Newhampton Road near Molineux.

And former Express & Star correspondent David Harrison – now the main meeter and greeter for media personnel arriving for Wolves home games – used his friendship with the inside-forward to obtain permission to air some of the broadcast views.

We don’t wish to dilute the effect of the piece by divulging the contents of the show but found the article compelling reading, as it invariably is when Knowles speaks.

And the text is supported by photos showing him appearing from the players’ tunnel before his last match (against Nottingham Forest in September, 1969) and in his work as a Jehovah’s Witness.

Wolves Heroes’ David Instone, another regular contributor to this outstanding publication, has an article in the same magazine.

His pursuit of Ron Stockin and the part he played in having him belatedly presented in the summer with a League Championship winners’ medal forms part of an extended look at the handing-over of backdated honours.

The words appear alongside pictures of Ron at 90 and as a Wolves player in the early 1950s and alongside a story of how various Manchester City players have been similarly honoured.

Bringing us much more up to date, column inches are also devoted to Jon Purdie.

David McVay, a former Notts County and Peterborough player and a Backpass writer throughout the magazine’s life span of approaching 80 issues, is the man who has spotlighted the former Molineux, Kidderminster and Arsenal player.

Among the topics aired in the interview are the ‘Purds, Booze and Footy’ book the player brought out earlier this year.
