Adding To The Medal Collection

Handover Puts More Treasures In Public Domain

Wolves’ magnificent museum now contains a 1958 FA Youth Cup winners’ medal and 1960 Charity Shield medal for the first time – thanks to the family of Johnny Kirkham and the role of this website as go-betweens.

We reported several weeks ago that we had taken delivery of various keepsakes from the Wednesbury-born wing-half’s career.

Now, a home has been found at Molineux for the best of them so they can be enjoyed by the club’s supporters.

David Instone handed the treasured items over in the hours leading up to the Premier League visit of Arsenal and was delighted to be told cabinet space had already been located for them.

“These are terrific additions to all the items we have in the various showcases,” said club historian Peter Crump. “I’ve never even seen and handled anything from these two occasions before.

What the Youth Cup heroes received.

“That Youth Cup final against Chelsea is an iconic game in Wolves’ history and it’s fantastic to have a souvenir like this from a final we won so famously after losing the first leg 5-1.

“For Johnny to then have received a Charity Shield medal after we drew at Burnley two and a bit years later shows what a golden time it was here.

“We love being able to use our museum to celebrate all those successes and know these new items will create a lot of interest among supporters.”

We at Wolves Heroes were surprised, even shocked, when Johnny’s son, Darrell, contacted us in the late autumn asking if we could find a suitable home for the medals and other pieces, including team photos, England badges and several booklets relating to travelling arrangements for the player’s appearances in the country’s under-23 and youth sides.

A share of the Charity Shield spoils.

We immediately announced our intention to support the museum and have the items on public view, and will be sending more of the possessions to Wolves when we have fully researched the background stories.

The 1960 Charity Shield game, at League champions Burnley, was the most recent of the five Wolves have played in and ended in a 2-2 draw.

Highlights of the fixture, in which equalisers by Norman Deeley and Jimmy Murray earned Stan Cullis’s side a share of the honours, are available on Youtube.
