Oh that Wolves could this afternoon have pulled off a repeat of one of the most remarkable results in their 135-year history.

It is 57 years tomorrow since Stan Cullis’s side went to South Wales and trounced Cardiff 9-1 in the top flight, with Johnny Hancocks and Roy Swinbourne each hitting hat-tricks.

Be that as it may that the Welshmen came to the West Midlands and took some revenge with a 2-0 success four months later.

The spectacular triumph at Ninian Park remains Wolves’ all-time biggest away win and is one of no fewer than a century of epic Wolves matches being featured in a new book.

Club historian John Hendley has just completed a labour of love and seen through an idea he has nurtured over several years by compiling ‘Greatest Games: 100 Pieces Of Gold.’

The hard-back is due for publication next month and stretches from the club’s very first League game (a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa in 1888) to the thrilling 3-3 Premier League draw with Tottenham the season before last.

Derek Parkin has provided the foreword and will find his name featuring several times as Wolves’ various cup and European successes are well covered.

“The only Wolves defeat I have included is the UEFA Cup final against Spurs,” the author said. “I’ve obviously covered the Wembley triumphs and a plethora of matches from the 1950s, including the most famous of the floodlit games.

“Matches we won spectacularly crop up regularly, so there are 6-4s and the 7-1 against Chelsea. My second Wolves game is also in there – the 8-2 win over Portsmouth in November, 1965, when we were six up at half-time.

“From the recent past, the 2-1 home victory over Manchester United and the 3-1 win at West Ham in front of the Sky cameras are among the 100 as well.”

The book is much more than a kick-by-kick account of games. The background to the fixtures and significance of them are detailed, too.

And, in cup-winning campaigns, accounts are given of each of the ties en route.
