Wolves supporters continue to be superbly served by the highly successful football nostalgia magazine, Backpass. The quality, long-running publication is approaching its 50th issue and always throws up plenty of stories and snippets of a gold and black tint.
No 9 Meets Another No 1
Lofty Next For JR
Our determination to keep John Richards’s popular Q & A feature as an item that appeals to the different generations has left one very deserving case in the shadows rather longer than he should have been. Many of Phil Parkes’ 382 League and cup appearances for Wolves were made in sides that had JR as the spearhead of the attack. And now you can be party to the in-depth conversation between the two of them about their happy Molineux past.
New Posting For Dean Of Torquay
The Lure Of Wolverhampton
Dean Edwards is back in Wolverhampton pursuing his football career – and admits he is attracted by the thought of moving home permanently. The mid-1980s Molineux striker is spending a few days in the city of his birth and attended a Wolves home game yesterday for the first time in about six years.
My Sad Double Loss – Bobby
Emotional Cathedral Date For Ex-Wolves Forward
Bobby Gould is delighted to be playing a leading role this weekend after departing overseas immediately following the shattering loss of his two biggest influences in the game. The former Wolves striker’s January 2 departure for a three-week holiday in New Zealand did much more than deny him any opportunity to go to watch Kenny Jackett’s side in FA Cup third-round action away to another of his old clubs, West Ham, the weekend after.
Stowell And Leicester…….Could It Really Happen?
Five-Point Gap May Make Wolves Favourite A Title Winner
At Sir Jack Hayward’s funeral a year ago last week, Mike Stowell fielded one or two delicately posed questions about Leicester’s Premier League plight and acknowledged the uphill fight they faced to preserve their hard-won top flight status. Their 1-0 home defeat against Crystal Palace on February 7 left them bottom of the table, two points behind QPR and three adrift of 18th-placed Burnley.
When Warnock Loomed Large On Wolves’ Radar
After Mick……It Might Have Been Neil
We don’t often home in on stories from the recent past but considered this one to be worth posting, coming as it does straight from the horse’s mouth. Neil Warnock wouldn’t have been every Wolves fan’s choice as manager, so how close was he to being appointed following the sacking of Mick McCarthy early in February, 2012, during the last of the club’s three successive seasons in the Premier League?
He’s Behind You!
Lonely Vigil Helped Bring Evan His Dream Move
Visiting keepers have long enjoyed the reception they have been given by Anfield’s Kop in recognition of heroic efforts. Evan Williams has an altogether different story to tell, though, of admiration from behind him when he performed in the shadow of British football’s most famous piece of terracing.
Dear Diary Entry 52
Out Of Africa ……Some Surprise Wolves Interest
Tuesday, January 5: Was surprised to receive an early-morning call from Africa asking me to explore the possibility of some interview work with current Wolves players over the coming weeks.
More Memories Of Lost Star
A Class Act On Camera, Too
Roy Swinbourne’s funeral last Friday inspired us to delve into the archives and further remind ourselves what a delightful man he was as well as a top, top player. Around a decade ago, I had the pleasure of editing and compiling the Official History of Wolves dvd and naturally included the former centre-forward in a memorable day’s filming at Molineux that also contained lengthy sit-down chats on camera with Jimmy Dunn, Bert Williams, Eddie Stuart, Malcolm Finlayson – all also now sadly passed on – Ron Flowers and Bill Slater.
Fitting Tributes For Roy
Packed Church For The Final Journey
“He wasn’t a Drogba, nor a Vardy…..he relied much more on his skill than those two…..” Ted Farmer, one of seven former Wolves players at yesterday’s funeral of Roy Swinbourne at Stourbridge’s New Road Methodist Church, was striving to come up with a fitting likeness to a man who became a Molineux hero to him.
