Kindo Striking A Nostalgic Note
Tuesday, August 4: Enjoyed reconnecting Steve Kindon with a figure from his Wolves past. Harvey Andrews is not only a well-known name from the music scene but was also the first manager of Wolves’ old club shop – that small, long-gone structure behind the North Bank. The two knew each other in the early 1970s and have again been chatting after we traced Harvey’s contact details at Kindo’s request.
Sunday, August 9: We were hugely saddened to hear today of the death of supporter Scott Pritchard, creator of the terrific www.wolvescompletehistory.co.uk website. At John Richards’ instigation, we had a Zoom chat a few months ago with Blackpool-based Scott and his good friend across the world in Melbourne, Mark Povah, and now send our deepest condolences to Scott’s family and closest friends.
Friday, August 14: A good number of ex-players were in attendance for the League season opener against Blackburn this evening, among them Jody Craddock, Andy Thompson and Mark Atkins on radio pundit duty and Dave Edwards and Robbie Dennison in what appeared to be merely spectator roles. John Richards was present, too. On top of all those reunions, it was good to meet up for a drink before kick-off with John Lalley and Gwilym Machin, the latter on a one-night visit from Glasgow.
Saturday, August 15: Made a first visit to what has been Barnet’s home for the last 13 years, The Hive, for the game against Salford. Our pleasant day out, containing a morning visit to Lord’s, wasn’t mirrored in the performance of Will Norris. Among a cluster of cup appearances for Wolves, the 33-year-old keeper was given a single League start (at Sunderland) for Nuno’s 2017-18 second-tier champions and went on as a late substitute in the home win over Fulham the following season. Several transfers on, this was his League debut in new colours and his side’s 3-1 defeat was hardly a happy occasion for him.
Wednesday, August 19: Nice of Marge Gould to tip us off that her husband, Bobby, was appearing tonight on a Sky Sports programme celebrating Coventry’s long-awaited return to the top flight. A camera crew recently descended on their lovely home south of Bristol and the broadcasted result was a very watchable half-hour which we trust the family enjoyed.
Saturday, August 22: Bumped into Wolves historian Peter Crump at Wolverhampton railway station early this morning – he was heading for Preston for the club’s first away League game, John Lalley and I were off to Reading’s game at Wimbledon, where, after visits to York and Barnet in the last two or three weeks, I completed my full set of 92 grounds.
Monday, August 24: Watched John Farley’s funeral on click here (username coja 8632, password 926081). At this awful time for Wolves bereavements, it was sad to learn via the service on Humberside that the 1970s winger had died in care after suffering from dementia. We picked up, too, that ‘Charlie’ was quite a story-teller, although the tale of him drinking with Sir Elton John and Sir Rod Stewart seems plausible given that he played for Watford before Wolves and appeared on a team photo with the Hornets’ former owner as well as being a team-mate in a charity game. Guests filed into the service to the playing of Candle In The Wind.
Saturday, August 29: Was disappointed to just miss out on saying hello to George Berry at Wolves’ handsome victory over Stoke this afternoon. The clash of the two clubs who saw the best of his playing career was the perfect opportunity for him to be invited back to Molineux and he apparently proved good value on the mic in the Billy Wright Stand corporate areas before kick-off.
