Hampered – And Barney Was Delighted!

Wednesday, September 3: Was pleased to receive a thank-you phone call and text today from Eileen Barnwell as a follow-up to our visit to her and John a few weeks ago. It had been my pleasant task to supply the couple’s address, with their permission, to Buckinghamshire-based Martyn Pritchard, a Wolverhampton-born Wolves fan of many decades’ standing. Martyn was a huge fan of the Barnwell era and wanted to send a belated token of his appreciation for 1979-80 and all that in the form of a food hamper. We were more than happy to step in as go-betweens to make it possible.
Saturday, September 6: A strong debut by Rob Edwards on Match Of The Day tonight alongside the highly experienced Danny Murphy. Articulate and interesting, he was everything we would have expected him to be; sufficient for presenter Gabby Logan to say at the end that he could come back!
Sunday, September 14: An 81st minute sub appearance against Wolves at Bramall Lane today underlined the fact that Matt Doherty is having to be patient for opportunities at his new club, Sheffield United. The experienced Republic of Ireland international has had to be content in League games so far with outings from the bench, although he has started twice in the Carabao Cup. What he will not have enjoyed is the close-up he had this afternoon of Raul Jimenez’s late winner.
Wednesday, September 17: What are the chances of drawing the same opponents in two successive Carabao Cup campaigns – and of going to their new stadium twice in the space of eight months? Wolves’ narrow defeat at Everton tonight was a second chance for the supporters who missed out on the League draw between the sides at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January. It’s some stadium and we hope Wolves will soon be back there with points at stake.
Sunday, September 20: Plenty of familiar faces in the media room – and beyond – at the Wolves-Albion derby this afternoon. Among us were Andy Thompson, Jody Craddock, The Baggies’ Tony Brown and Sky Sports’ Don Goodman while Steve Bull was also working for the broadcaster at pitch-side and Dave Edwards, Robbie Dennison and Ruben Neves were among those in the ground as well.
Monday, September 21: Upsetting to hear that Jordan Graham, the winger who briefly showed considerable promise with Wolves in the middle of the last decade, is in hospital after a serious road accident. The PFA said he has received specialist treatment since the crash. Graham, 31, played 17 games for Wolves, 49 for Birmingham between 2021 and 2023 and was a Villa academy boy. He also had loan spells with Ipswich, Bradford City, Oxford and Fulham. In total, he has had 188 career outings but has not played since leaving Orient in 2025.

Friday, September 25: A disappointingly low-key return to Molineux for Conor Coady tonight with England under-21s. The hugely popular former club captain will rarely have known the stadium as quiet as it was for the 4-2 European Championship qualifying success against Kazakhstan – a game for which he served as assistant to coach Lee Carsley. The attendance was sub-6,000, so a far cry from the career the Liverpudlian had with the senior England team, including at the World Cup.
Saturday, September 26: These are happy days for Andreas Weisman. More than ten years on from when he netted one of the goals with which Wolves beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the FA Cup at Anfield, he has scored in four successive games for Cheltenham, the latest of them today in a victory against Paul Cook’s Chesterfield. Although now well past his 35th birthday, the Austrian forward is within two of his century of League goals in club football and is into the teens for cup goals as well.
