Great To See Robbie Again – Lampard

Robbie Dennison is still buzzing after a meet-up with one of the most famous ‘roomies’ it is possible to have in English football.

The Ulsterman turned the walk-on role he had at Saturday’s home game against Chelsea as part of Molineux’s 130-year celebrations into a chance for a quick reunion with visiting boss Frank Lampard.

The two were not only team-mates at Swansea in the mid-1990s during their overlapping loan spell in South Wales but accommodated together in a hotel.

Lampard revealed the historical connection in his autobiography around a decade ago and was just striding out for the second half last week when photographer Dave Bagnall – in the tunnel area at the time – alerted him to a familiar face nearby.

“We got on well as Swansea team-mates and I have to say how genuinely pleased Frank seemed to be at having a brief catch-up,” said Dennison.

“I introduced myself to him and wouldn’t have been surprised if he hadn’t remembered me. After all, it was only a few weeks that we knew each other and well over 20 years has passed since.

“He has done a huge amount in that time, which has always sat well with me. I am watching his management career now with great interest.”

We had our own brief chat after the game with Lampard, whose face lit up again with the mention of the happy event.

“It was brilliant to see Robbie again,” he said. “He’s a good guy who I enjoyed spending a few weeks with when we were both down there on loan. It has been too long!”

We hope the story still has legs in it. The photo Bagnall took of the two of them is now in Dennison’s possession and his plan is to ask Chelsea’s record all-time goalscorer to sign it.

“Maybe I can see him again on another Midlands trip this season,” he added. “Alternatively, I would be happy to go down to Chelsea to have it autographed.”

We reported on here in 2013 that the first of the midfielder’s 353 competitive games for Wolves was a 4-0 home in against Swansea in March, 1987.

It is 31 years next week since he then netted the opening goal in the side’s 5-2 victory at the Vetch in the Third Division title-winning campaign under the man who brought him here, Graham Turner.

We are pleased to report that Robbie watches nearly all Wolves’ home games from the Stan Cullis Stand and is also content in a new phase of his working life.

He has been working as a postman in Stourbridge since April and said: “It is eight or nine miles of brisk walking five days a week and I feel better for having lost a few pounds. I am very happy happy doing it.”
