So where does Wolves’ stunning FA Cup win at Anfield rate in the club’s pecking order? We delved into our memories and the history books to come up with some other stunning away days from the last 50 years – based on their sheer unpredictability. For that reason, you won’t read here about cup finals or semi-finals but there is still much to enjoy poring over….
November 15, 1975: Burnley 1 Wolves 5: Both clubs were relegated six months later but Bill McGarry’s men cheered their drenched supporters with a rain-sodden first away League win in over 13 months. John Richards opened the scoring inside 18 seconds with one of the fastest goals in Wolves history and we were all able to enjoy it on Match of the Day.
February 9, 1980: Manchester United 0 Wolves 1 Mel Eves’ goal has stood the test of time as a memorable one, given that Wolves haven’t won at Old Trafford since. League Cup final glory was close but Wolves had thus also achieved a first League double over United since 1960-61.
January 14, 1984: Liverpool 0 Wolves 1 An in-off from Steve Mardenborough’s shoulder stunned the side who were then utterly rampant in English football. It gave brief hope to the victors but they were hopelessly out of their depth and finished bottom by the small matter of 12 points. Liverpool recovered to win the title – again.
February 14, 1987: Burnley 2 Wolves 5 Back to Turf Moor for not so much an epic win as one that proved the club had turned the corner. In the previous month, Wolves failed to score against Wrexham and Cambridge and lost to Crewe. The curve was all upward after this big victory, which was secured by five different scorers not including Steve Bull.
September 22, 1987: Manchester City 1 Wolves 2 Littlewoods Cup goals by Bully and Robbie Dennison brought down a City side from two divisions higher. Sadly, this Maine Road meeting was only a first leg and the return meeting of the 1974 finalists two weeks later went slightly more emphatically in favour of Mel Machin’s side.
January 1, 1990: Newcastle 1 Wolves 4 Could the 1990s have started any better than this? Graham Turner’s men survived a first-half penalty miss before running amok with four Steve Bull goals in the second period. All this on the day nearly 1,000 Wolves fans flew north in English football’s most famous ‘squadron’!
September 27, 1992: Birmingham 0 Wolves 4 It wasn’t necessarily the scoreline that did it in this early-season second-tier derby….it was the fact that all four goals came in the first half, three of them from the little-known Darren Roberts. For those unable to be at St Andrew’s, it made for excellent viewing on live Sunday afternoon TV.
March 7, 1998: Leeds 0 Wolves 1 Don Goodman’s late goal, followed by Hans Segers’ even later penalty save from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, saw off George Graham’s top-flight high-fliers and sent Mark McGhee’s side through to a first FA Cup semi-final in 17 years. And it was a 3pm tie on a Saturday!
November 7, 1998: Bristol City 1 Wolves 6 Wolves had had dreadful trouble recovering to win games after falling behind but spectacularly remedied that malaise by hitting back at Ashton Gate on the day Wolfie also ‘devoured’ those pesky piggies! David Connolly couldn’t previously hit a barn door but scored four of them.
May 6, 2007: Leicester 1 Wolves 4 Okay, we have sneaked this one in partly because it looks such a good result now but it nevertheless underlined the durability of Mick McCarthy’s team of unexpected promotion chasers. It came on the last day of the regular season and clinched a play-off spot after Leicester had taken an early lead.
December 29, 2010: Liverpool 0 Wolves 1 Back to the scene of yesterday’s triumph for a reminder that Stephen Ward steered home the only goal at the ground more than six years ago – one of a remarkable four victories they achieved that season against the Premier League’s absolute elite.
