Another UEFA Cup Tour For Stand-In Skipper

Jim McCalliog is making another visit to Molineux at the weekend to help mark one of several major anniversary milestones in Wolves’ proud history.

It was 50 years yesterday since the Glaswegian played in the notorious 2-1 home win over Leeds that denied his first professional club a League and FA Cup double.

And he has coming down from to Wolverhampton in the coming days to help with some museum tours aimed at celebrating the golden anniversary of the journey to the UEFA Cup final under Bill McGarry.

In the absence of the injured Mike Bailey, McCalliog was captain during the latter stages of that historic run, including both legs of an unlucky, anti-climactic final against Tottenham.

He scored in the first meeting at Molineux, having also netted at Den Haag in the second round and more famously in a 1-1 quarter-final first-leg draw away to Juventus.

“Because we are busy in the B & B back home, we can’t both travel down unfortunately and I am planning at present to go and come back in the same day,” McCalliog told us,

“If anything should change and there is a call or a chance of a book-signing session on the Sunday, I would stay over and watch the game against Norwich.

“But I always love my trips back to Wolves and am looking forward greatly to reminiscing about that incredible UEFA Cup season with supporters. It gave us all some terrific memories.

“It’s nice that the club want to mark this anniversary and I will be glad to play my part as fans go round that brilliant museum.”

McCalliog missed only one of the 12 matches Wolves played in the run – the first (home) leg against Academica Coimbra in the first round.
