Kenny Hibbitt has taken steps to ease an arthritic condition that has helped cast a shadow over his summer.
The much-loved midfielder is head and shoulders the best golfer of his Molineux generation but was suffering some discomfort when we saw him on the course at Walmley, near Sutton Coldfield, in early May.
“I still have the problem and was offered the chance of an injection into my hand which should help it,” he said.
“We haven’t had the best year because my wife Jane has broken a bone in her arm and our daughter had a back operation, so there has been a lot of looking-after to do.
“The golf has understandably taken a back seat but I’m told I should be able to play again after 48 hours or so and I hope this procedure will free me up a little.
“Jane keeps telling me I shouldn’t expect to play like I did ten or 20 years ago but it’s still not easy to see your handicap creeping up and to not feel as competitive.
“Obviously football and the treatment we all received for injuries can have repercussions later in life but, despite the discomfort I have been feeling, I wouldn’t change a day of my playing career.”
Hibbitt was the 2015 winner of the Footballers’ Golf Classic – the foremost tournament among players from his premier sport. That success in La Manga in Spain came in his 16th crack at the event.
The Hibbitts stayed over with Pam and John Richards following last week’s Wolves Former Players competition at Oxley Park.
It is 53 years this weekend since Kenny started a first-team game for Wolves for the first time – an occasion he marked with one of the goals in a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
*We at Wolves Heroes would like to add our condolences to the family and friends of former Molineux defender John Harris, who has passed away aged 84. We will be writing again soon about the full-back, who also served Walsall before dropping into non-League.
