Onward And Upward

Utility Man Now In 200 Club

Stephen Ward - appearance milestone.

Wolves’ first midweek goalscorer Stephen Ward has become the latest addition to the Legends area of this website.

The popular Irishman, who is now more than five and a half years into his Molineux career, has taken his tally of appearances for the club past an important landmark in the opening days of the season.

He now stands on 201 first-team outings going into the weekend home clash with Derby and so creeps in at no 78 on Wolves’ all-time list.

But the next time he lines up – and that will presumably be tomorrow – he will be level with three other men, John Holsgrove, Jack Needham and Charlie Phillips all having played 202 matches for the club.

Ward is also the third player from the years since the club first reached the Premier League to have gone through the 200-game barrier.

Jody Craddock, who was signed by Dave Jones in 2003, departed in the close season having played 237 times and Wolverhampton-born Karl Henry is now close to breaking into the Molineux top 50.

He has 233 appearances to his name but with huge power to add. With a new four-year contract signed, he has the potential to approach the 400-match mark if he remains fit and in favour.

It’s anyone’s guess, though, who will be the next addition to this select group.

Matt Jarvis might well have graduated had he been content to stay put in the wake of relegation. His big-money move to West Ham this week came after he made exactly 175 Wolves appearances (with 21 goals).

Our Legends area is based purely on the number of games played for the club and was launched in 2008 with the top 75 appearance makers in Molineux history. It is not in any way drawn up at our discretion.
