$The hazy late summer sun wasn\'t the only concern to Phil Parkes and John Holsgrove when they set foot on Goodison Park in Ronnie Allen\'s only top-flight season as Wolves manager. There was also a certain Alan Ball to worry about and his goal-scoring brilliance was the difference between the teams in this 4-2 early September defeat. The day was at least a red-letter one for Les Wilson, who became the first Wanderers substitute to go on and score.$

Goodman would become a big-money signing at Molineux the following season on the same day that John de Wolf arrived but this success in the North East came at a cost - it was the day Geoff Thomas started to suffer his catalogue of injury problems.$ $Are we shaping up for a repeat of the thrilling Second Division promotion race of 1966-67? Kenny Jackett\'s Wolves remain high fliers in League One approaching the half-way stage of the season. But the homeless Sky Blues are shaping up well also and are reviving memories of when the two clubs climbed together into the top flight 46 seasons ago. Here, Hugh Curran challenges City keeper Bill Glazier at Highfield Road in 1969. And who is Wolves\' final away game of 2013-14? None other than the Sky Blues.$ $In the mood for playing it again next year are Phil Parkes (nearest camera) and Steve Daley after the success of the second Ex Wolves Players Golf Day. The tournament on September 20 raised £5,000, with the proceeds divided between the Maureen Parkes Breast Care Fund and Compton Hospice. Also pictured are Sheila Edwards from New Cross Hospital and Simon Cater from the hospice. Next year\'s event has already been fixed up for September 19, again at Oxley Park.$ $Pre-season training 1966 style sees Ron Flowers, fresh from his part in England\'s victorious World Cup squad, on the ball at Molineux, watched by (from left) Terry Wharton, Ernie Hunt and Hugh McIlmoyle. Flowers would play exactly a third of the 42 League games that led to promotion from the Second Division but Hunt showed the way with 20 goals, plus one in the FA Cup, and McImoyle and Wharton backed him up superbly by totalling 17 and 14 respectively.$ $As our posts this season have had to concentrate much more than we would have liked on sad occasions, we are delighted to show this image of much happier Wolverhampton Wanderers times. No prizes for working out that it\'s the 1960 FA Cup final in question, with that season\'s Footballer of the Year Bill Slater held up on the shoulders of Ron Flowers and Peter Broadbent. $Peter Broadbent, the brilliant Wolves inside-forward whose death at the age of 80 has been announced today. We at Wolves Heroes wish to send our deepest condolences to Peter\'s wife Shirley and all of his family and friends. He is the second member of the club\'s victorious 1960 FA Cup final team after Barry Stobart to pass away in just over a month. Evans was at Wolves for more than a decade and a half and was also in the Anglesey side who gave Wolves a much closer game than in this 6-0 thrashing when the teams met the following summer as well.$

Wolves had the confidence of having won two lower division titles in the previous two seasons and had a decent stab at making the play-offs in this one as well. A single John Paskin goal saw off the West Countrymen as Graham Turner\'s side began to find their feet in higher company after a difficult start to the campaign. They also won by the same score at Home Park in the February, when Andy Mutch\'s opportunism did the trick. Floyd Streete and Tommy Tynan do battle here.$ $Derek Dougan bursts forward in Wolves\' game at Tottenham in the autumn of 1969. Bill McGarry was a few weeks into his first full season in charge and his Wanderers side made themselves at home in the White Hart Lane sunshine, winning through a goal from Hugh Curran. The players in the background are Bernard Shaw and Alan Gilzean. The Doog, who died in mid-summer, 2007, would now have been 75.$ $If only all fans were like this! Gwilym Machin and wife Morag had a blow-out on the M74 when setting off from Glasgow for Sunday\'s Jim Heath tribute day. They still made it down on time and he then dug deep for an item in the auction; of a goal celebration by a certain Wolves star in what has become Gwilym\'s home city. Now he\'s counting off the days to when Wolves tour Scotland this month and to the Capital One Cup tie at Morecambe - the first of the trips he will be making south this season at the rate of about one a month.$ $Taking a well-earned breather in front of a famous skyline is former Wolves striker Don Goodman. Read up in our News area now why the Sky Sports co-commentator and his fellow travellers were entitled to let their hair down in Las Vegas recently. It certainly wasn\'t a case of all play for he and a group of other ex professional footballers. Goodman played 154 first-team games for Wolves, his stay from 1994 to 1998 bringing him 39 goals.$ $East meets West 20 years ago - in the Midlands at least. Wolves\' Paul Jones throws himself across his goal in a 2-0 defeat for Graham Turner\'s side at Derby\'s Baseball Ground on the final day of the 1992-93 season. The Rams player in view is Paul Simpson - later to serve as well at Molineux - while the defender nearest to him is the similarly named Darren Simkin. This was also the afternoon on which Turner\'s son Mark made his only senior Wolves appearance. Photo courtesy of Derby Telegraph.$ $As a sort of last word on our memorable recent meeting with the Boys of 66 - and as a nod to England\'s highly creditable draw in Brazil last night - we show Ron Flowers and Roger Hunt in relaxed mood at Acton Trussell\'s Moat House Hotel. The Wolves legend, whose 49 England caps included two against the South American giants, hosted a get-together of our nation\'s World Cup winners at his home course, Brocton Hall, two weeks ago.$ $A match to forget for David Kelly......not only was the striker off target in Wolves\' game at Millwall in early December, 1994, but he was later sent off in their 1-0 defeat. The result came during a sorry Wolves slide and prompted manager Graham Taylor into drastic action. In the next few days, he signed both John de Wolf and Don Goodman at a time when he also recruited Brian Law, Jermaine Wright and Gordon Cowans. Alas, the side never managed to regain their position at the top of the table and were destined to lose in the play-offs.$ $Reflecting on happier times in this photo specially taken for Wolves Heroes are the site\'s two biggest supporters, Charles Bamforth (left) and Les Wilson. They met for the first time a week or so ago and spent time at the latter\'s home in Vancouver and are also the subject of our first post-relegation post. $In the countdown to Saturday\'s big Molineux clash, we spotlight a meeting between Wolves and Middlesbrough from nearly a quarter of a century ago. Gary Pallister is the man heading goalwards here, with Tony Mowbray the team-mate awaiting a loose ball. The no 5 is Shane Westley, who was making his Wolves debut in this Ayresome Park clash in August, 1989. The other visiting defenders are Gary Bellamy and skipper Alistair Robertson. Boro won 4-2 in what was Wolves\' first game back in the Second Division following successive promotions.$ $Together again! The toast to absent friends made special mention of late skipper Emlyn Hughes.$ $Another image from Wolves\' 2-0 top-flight victory over Arsenal at Highbury 45 years ago next week. Derek Dougan is the man in possession and in the spotlight here on a day when the goals came from elsewhere for Ronnie Allen\'s side. Their scorers were John Holsgrove and Frank Wignall. Wolves were in relegation danger at the time in that 1967-68 campaign but were to pull themselves clear with a little to spare.$ $The under-construction showpiece Billy Wright Stand provides the unusual backdrop as Andy Mutch touches home the last of his 106 Wolves goals. This close-range effort in April, 1993, proved the only goal of the game in a League win over Kevin Keegan\'s Newcastle, for whom Barry Venison is the hapless stripe-shirted figure. Mutch, supported here by Robbie Dennison, was sold to a then top-flight Swindon for £250,000 in the following summer.$ $A lone workman peers out as Andy Mutch touches home the last of his 106 Wolves goals. Kenny Hibbitt looks on from afar but a side who had reached the FA Cup semi-final only a few months earlier were in decline. They left Elland Road on the wrong end of a 3-0 hiding. It was their third successive defeat after a surprise 1-0 opening-day victory over Liverpool and they would drop out of the top flight like a stone the following spring.$ $A glowing George Showell, slightly hidden behind Peter Broadbent, is all smiles on Wolves\' long trip to America and Canada in the early summer of 1963. Please see the Obituaries section of this website for our extended tribute to George, who sadly passed away this week.$ $Alistair Robertson finds himself led a bit of a dance at Middlesbrough in August, 1989, in Wolves\' first League game in more than four years outside of the two lower divisions. The skipper had just led Graham Turner\'s side to successive title triumphs in the Fourth and Third Divisions but would play only this match and four others in the higher grade. Wolves were beaten 4-2 in the sun at Ayresome Park and took a while to find their feet in their higher company.$ $Robbie Dennison in control during Wolves\' narrow home victory over Plymouth in September, 1989. And Wolves would click even more by hammering Portsmouth 5-0 in their next home match in the Second Division.$ $Andy Thompson, previously of Albion, looks on with understandable anxiety as Don Goodman, later of Wolves, scores with a twisting header in the Black Country derby at Molineux in April, 1991. The beaten Mike Stowell didn\'t manage to see out the game....he went off injured to be replaced in goal by Tom Bennett. Paul Birch is the man on the line here on a day on which Bobby Gould\'s Albion achieved some respite on a slippery slope that led them to relegation from the Second Division the following month.$ $Frank Munro piles in as Wolves apply pressure to Sheffield Wednesday\'s goal during the League Cup tie at Molineux on October 4, 1972. The hugely popular defender was among the scorers on a night when Bill McGarry\'s side reached round four by a 3-1 margin, Kenny Hibbitt and Derek Dougan netting the others. The no 7 in shot is Danny Hegan. Wolves reached the semi-final of the competition before narrowly losing over two legs to Tottenham.$ $It\'s Wolves against Brighton from past decades - from when the two teams were in the First Division together, in fact. During their only four seasons of top-flight football, the Seagulls seemed to exert a certain hold on Wolves and won this opening-day fixture 2-0 at the Goldstone Ground in August, 1980. Andy Gray finds boyhood Molineux fanatic Brian Horton on his shoulder here, the striker having touched in a League Cup final winner a few months earlier.$ $We\'re relying on the much more recent past for our latest \'Big Picture\' choice - in the hope of creating a good mood before Wolves\' Championship trip to Burnley on Saturday! This was the easiest goal Matt Jarvis will ever score in his career; a two-foot tap-in that helped his side to a vital 2-1 Premier League victory at Turf Moor in March, 2010. This gift was not the only one Mick McCarthy\'s side received that day. They were also recipients of a Clarke Carlisle own goal as their survival effort gathered pace.$ $Derek Parkin jockeys Cyrille Regis during the 1-1 Black Country derby draw at The Hawthorns in April, 1979. The game came mid-way through a six-game unbeaten run for John Barnwell\'s men that kept them out of relegation danger. Regis, later of Wolves of course, was kept quiet to the degree that he didn\'t score. Albion\'s goal came from Bryan Robson, with John Richards heading Wolves\' equaliser on the ground where he had made his Football League debut nearly a decade earlier.$ $Jim McCalliog hurtles into an aerial challenge on the night Wolves won the Texaco Cup more than 41 years ago. The Scot was an ever-present in his club\'s campaign in the competition but was beaten to the punch here by Hearts goalkeeper Jim Cruickshank. The 3-1 victory recorded by Bill McGarry\'s side at Tynecastle was enough to see them through this anti-climactic 1-0 second-leg defeat at Molineux on May 3, 1971.$ $Danny Crainie gives chase as West Ham midfielder Paul Allen releases a pass in Wolves\' top-flight game at Upton Park 29 seasons ago. Graham Hawkins\' side dropped like a stone following their surprise promotion the year before and this 1-1 draw in mid-March was one of their better results. Scott McGarvey was the scorer for a side who had beaten Nottingham Forest the week before.$ $Not only is Les Wilson a huge supporter of and help to this website, he is a quite brilliant host and tour guide! No sooner had he and wife Lois waved off David Burnside\'s widow Muriel following her latest extended stay with them in Vancouver than they were welcoming one of his former Molineux colleagues to British Columbia. Ray Aggio, a Wolves reserve of the mid-1960s before going on to have an excellent career in non-League, has just spent time in Canada with his partner Mary (also pictured here). \"There was a lot of catching up to do\" seems to have been the sentiment.....$ $Nicky Clarke (left) and Floyd Streete in charge in Wolves\' Second Division home game against Plymouth 23 years ago this month. The feeling of supremacy was nothing new. Graham Turner\'s side had won the two lower-division titles the previous two seasons and would not fall far short either in the race for a play-off place in 1989-90.$ $At the start of Capital One Cup second-round week, we look back at Wolves\' trip to another lower-division club in the autumn of 1994. Chesterfield are the opponents as Peter Shirtliff prepares to move on following a challenge by no 2 Paul Blades. Mark Venus is the other defender pictured. Graham Taylor\'s side trailed in this first-leg clash until hitting three goals in the final quarter of the evening to win 3-1. The second leg was drawn 1-1. The scene is Molineux for the penultimate home game of 2008-09, against QPR, at which a blast on the referee\'s whistle sparked a joyous pitch invasion at full-time. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake\'s second-half goal had given Mick McCarthy\'s side a 1-0 win and assured them of promotion. The title was to follow the weekend after.$ $Four gold shirts in a line but trouble looms for Wolves in their top-flight clash against QPR at Loftus Road in February, 1976. Despite a brace from Bobby Gould, Bill McGarry\'s side were beaten 4-2 and remained in trouble near the foot of the table. Rangers captain Gerry Francis converts a penalty here that he had won with a challenge by Frank Munro. Alongside the familiar faces on the edge of the area is Gerry O\'Hara, the Wolverhampton-born midfielder who played only 11 senior games for the club.$ $Close seasons used to be much different for Wolves to what they now are. At the end of their 1962-63 season, for example, they embarked on a month-long, ten-match tour of America and Canada - to be followed a year later by some busy island-hopping in the Caribbean. Wilson is seen with fellow nominee Alex Bunbury, who won 66 caps in a career that also included a spell at West Ham and a prolific stay with Maritimo several years after John Richards was there. The players were honoured during a weekend of nostalgia staged around the Canada v USA game in Toronto, Wilson\'s reminisences being heightened by the choice of hotel. He had also stayed at the Fairmont Royal York when with Wolves in the city in 1967.$ $Goal for Wolves in their 3-0 home victory over Southend on Bonfire Night afternoon in 1988. The scorer was not Andy Mutch, who appears to be the likeliest candidate, but Keith Downing (turning in celebration). On a day when Tom Bennett made his first-team debut as a substitute, Graham Turner\'s team recorded a fifth successive victory to climb to the top of the Third Division - a position they were in at the end of the season as well. Also pictured is the no 6 Phil Robinson. Wolves\' other goals came from Floyd Streete and Steve Bull.$ $Mark Venus (left) and Paul Cook decide that marking Paul Walsh is a two-man job in Wolves\' Second Division game against Portsmouth on April 24, 1993. Graham Turner\'s side finished the season with a run of four defeats in five games, their tail-off leaving them a disappointing 11th in the table. Pompey, helped by this 2-0 win at Fratton Park, ended like a train but narrowly missed out on promotion.$ $Eyes on the ball for Bobby Gould and Stoke defender Alan Bloor in the 1-1 Staffordshire derby draw at Molineux in September, 1970. Gould had arrived from Arsenal that summer, scored his first Wanderers goal in a 3-2 League win at Ipswich four days earlier and would finish as the club\'s leading marksman in 1970-71 with 24, including a hat-trick against Manchester United. Wolves started the season slowly but rallied superbly to finish fourth and qualify for the UEFA Cup.$ $It\'s all hands to the pump in front of Phil Parkes as Wolves defend in numbers in their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds in the spring of 1973. Don Revie\'s side won 1-0 with a Billy Bremner goal to take some revenge for their costly last-day League defeat at Molineux the previous season - an infamous night which was 40 years ago last week. The match was a personal celebration for two men - the former Huddersfield wing-half Bill McGarry, who was by then in charge of Wolves, and a young John Richards. The striker scored the first League goal of his career when going on as a substitute for Bobby Gould and helping seal a 3-1 victory. Gould and Hugh Curran had previously been on target for the side.$ $Derek Parkin leaps over the outstretched leg of Stewart Houston in Wolves\' home game against Manchester United on the opening day of the season in August, 1975. United were managed at the time by Tommy Docherty and had just returned to the top flight as champions following one year in the Second Division. Bill McGarry\'s side lost 1-0 in front of a 28,000-plus crowd but the 3-1 victory they had recorded at Tynecastle saw them home as the first winners of the competition.$ $In recognition of the fact Wolves are at Newcastle this weekend, we reach once more for the first photo we posted in this area of the site three and a half years ago. It dates back to the trip to St James\' Park in September, 1971, and shows Phil Parkes, watched by Frank Munro and a more distant Mike O\'Grady, producing a safe catch to deny Malcolm Macdonald. Alas, Bill McGarry\'s side were beaten 2-0.$ $Norman Bell applies the pressure in Wolves\' First Division game at Portman Road on October 10, 1981. The man often hailed as \'Supersub\' was in the starting 11 on this occasion but was unable to stave off a 1-0 defeat against an Ipswich side narrowly pipped to the League title by Aston Villa a few months earlier. The defender is Russell Osman.$ $Peter Daniel, a veteran of more than half a dozen Black Country derbies, tracks back with Albion\'s Tony Brown in the first of them - the League clash at Molineux in 1978-79. The away team, who were under the player-management of Glenn Hoddle at the time, emerged from this early-season clash in 1992-93 with an entertaining 2-2 draw despite the efforts here of Andy Mutch - later to join the Robins - and the grounded Robbie Dennison to force the ball home. Mutch and Keith Downing scored Wolves\' goals.$ $Steve Kindon, newly signed that summer from Burnley, does battle along the Eastville touchline with full-back Gareth Rovers during Wolves\' surprise 2-0 Watney Cup defeat against Third Division Bristol Rovers in the pre-season of 1972. There has been a link between Wolves and the West Country club this very week with the appointment there of ex-Molineux boss Mark McGhee.$ $A packed White Hart Lane, anxious Tottenham faces and Wolves defenders putting their bodies on the line....but there the similarities must end! Spurs, the opposition for Mick McCarthy\'s men in North London this afternoon, won this meeting 6-1 in February, 1982, and Wolves fans even had the agony of sitting through it on that night\'s Match of the Day. George Berry is the player seen grounded on the left while John Humphrey races across to try to quell the danger caused by Mark Falco and the seated Ricky Villa.$

$With South Africa and the World Cup gnawing away at the minds of all football fans, we are delighted to present this highly exclusive colour photo from when Wolves visited the country in 1957. The picture is part of the collection Wolves Heroes and Thomas Publications bought several weeks ago and is posted to coincide with our in-depth feature in the Tours Are Us section about the club\'s second trip there 53 years ago.$ $Another snap from the Wolves v Tottenham game of August, 1970, as keeper John Oldfield dives at the feet of Alan Mullery - the right-half who had been a mainstay of England\'s World Cup challenge in Mexico that summer. On the left is John Holsgrove, with Les Wilson in the background. Spurs won 3-0 but a Wolves side who had by then lost their opening three games recovered brilliantly to finish fourth in the table.$

Wolves\' legendary former manager, a feared disciplinarian, is pictured with a gun-carrying officer during the club\'s trip to the United States and Canada in the summer of 1963.$ $Wolves legend Steve Bull signs copies of the new \'Billy & Bully\' book at Molineux on Saturday. The 224-page hard-back is an evocative joint tribute to the striker and former England and Wanderers skipper Billy Wright, and is available through Wolves\' various retail outlets as well as in most High Street book stores and directly through Wolves Heroes.$ $Steve Bull is harassed by former Wolves defender George Berry in the Second Division game at the Victoria Ground in February, 1990. The clash, a forerunner of the one that will take place in the Potteries next weekend, was won 2-0 by Alan Ball\'s Stoke, who were battling to escape from the relegation battle at the time.$

$Wolves fans became used to promotion celebrations 20 years ago and turned out in their tens of thousands in the town when the club went up in successive seasons. First, in 1988, it was to celebrate the double of Fourth Division Championship and Sherpa Van Trophy. Then, here in 1989, it was on a Sunday morning to toast the club\'s Third Division title triumph. This picture, taken from the players\' open-top bus, is taken near Chapel Ash in Darlington Street.$ $Like now, Wolves were newcomers in a higher division when they played this pre-season friendly against Millwall at The Den in 1989. Graham Turner\'s side had just been promoted for the second year running and were about to embark on the first of 14 successive years of second-grade football. They performed well enough at the Londoners\' traditional home and scored one of their goals through a rare Steve Bull penalty, only to lose 3-2.$ $Austria, 1998 rather than Australia, 2009 is the setting for this pre-season shot from Wolves\' past. Mark McGhee\'s side were in alpine country 11 years ago and lost this game 2-0 against Wustenrot Salzburg, the sparse crowd giving the sides a lively welcome. An injury to Steve Sedgley that ended his tour made this an unforgettable evening for the visitors.$ $It hasn\'t been a bad few weeks for Mike Stowell......his present club Leicester promoted back to the Championship, his long-time former club Wolves up to the Premier League and now wedded bliss. The former keeper and Rachel McArthur, a player with Leeds and previously with England, Arsenal, Bristol City and Fulham, were married in the Italian resort of Sorrento. Not that the celebrations went off completely smoothly.....see the news area of this website for details.$ $Champions again! Wolves\' title as Masters kings is still intact after they ruled the Midlands roost at Birmingham\'s National Indoor Arena last night. A 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the play-off ensured they lifted the Midland Masters crown again and put them through to the grand finals in Liverpool on September 6. Also competing in the televised event, which drew a large following of Wolves fans to the Second City, were Albion and Birmingham.$

$Hard though it is to believe, it\'s 20 years ago this month that Steve Bull and Andy Mutch were England colleagues. They played side by side on an England B tour of Switzerland, Iceland and Norway, then they were named to play in the same under-21 team against Poland at Plymouth at the start of June. Between those commitments, Bull also made his senior England debut at Hampden - and scored.$ $Jim McCalliog gallops goalwards in Wolves\' Molineux clash with Coventry in October, 1971. Bill McGarry\'s side were in between the two legs of their UEFA Cup dismantling of Den Haag at the time, McCalliog having scored in the 3-1 win in Holland. The Sky Blues game was drawn 1-1.$ $A young Barry Powell gives chase to Leeds\' Black Country-born striker Allan Clarke in Wolves\' First Division game at Elland Road in October, 1974. In the background, in one of only 17 Wanderers appearances, is Peter Withe, who had scored in the previous weekend\'s win over Carlisle. March 2, 1974 is a date etched in the memories of all Wanderers fans as a result of the 2-1 victory over Manchester City that brought the silverware to Molineux. Frank Munro, having swapped shirts with Denis Law, helps Alan Sunderland (right) and substitute Barry Powell to chair skipper Mike Bailey while another of the side\'s youngsters, Geoff Palmer (left), completes the happy group.$

$The sight of the imperious Frank Munro at the heart of Wolves\' defence became a reassuring one for Wanderers supporters in the 1970s. The Scot won nine caps for his country as well as playing no fewer than 371 times for the club. Here, he is pictured in action against Southampton at The Dell. In the distance is striker Steve Kindon.$ $Andy Mutch takes off in determined pursuit of a high through ball on the evening in 1992 that Molineux\'s North Bank was populated again for the first time in seven years - thanks to the opening of the new Stan Cullis Stand. Although the official unveiling would come shortly afterwards with a Sunday friendly against Aston Villa, this Friday night warm-up against Arsenal was a special occasion as well, albeit a goalless draw. Lee Dixon is the Gunners defender under pressure from a striker who was just about to start his final Molineux season.$ $Derek Parkin, just inducted into Wolves\' new Hall of Fame, prepares to defend a Burnley corner in a game at Turf Moor in the early 1970s. At his side is home forward Frank Casper, also policed by Frank Munro. Parkin played a club record 609 League and cup games for Wolves and is regarded as one of the best English full-backs never to win a cap.$ $It\'s 35 years ago this month since Wolves reached their first League Cup final - and here are three men at the centre of their success. Skipper Mike Bailey (left) would lift the trophy after the 2-1 Wembley victory over Manchester City two months later - a memorable win in which John Richards (centre) and Kenny Hibbitt scored. Richards also netted both goals in the semi-final conquest of Norwich.$ $Fifty-four years ago this week, these three giants lined up in the Wolves side who brought down mighty Honved in one of Molineux\'s most famous all-time games. Bill Shorthouse (left), Eddie Stuart (centre) and Bert Williams were part of the backbone of the team who hit back from two down to win 3-2 in front of 54,998 fans. The trio are pictured here at the 1993 re-match of the clubs that was staged to celebrate the completion of Sir Jack Hayward\'s extensive Molineux make-over.$ $John Farrington presses Charlie Hurley (left) and Martin Harvey during Wolves\' home game with Sunderland on September 14, 1968. The fixture, a 1-1 top-flight draw, was a big one for the winger, who was born on Tyneside and is a Newcastle fan. Frank Wignall netted in this encounter but Farrington scored his only professional hat-trick when playing for Cardiff against Sunderland\'s FA Cup-winning side a few years later.$

$Britain was suffering power cuts and shortened working weeks 35 years ago this month - and the impact was felt in the early stages of what would prove to be Wolves\' triumphant run in the League Cup. This fourth-round tie at home to Exeter was played on a midweek afternoon in front of only 7,623 because clubs were unable to use floodlights. Kenny Hibbitt celebrates one of his two goals here as Wolves overcome Fourth Division opponents who had put Albion out at The Hawthorns in the previous round.$ $It\'s 55 years ago this month that an England side captained by Billy Wright were sensationally destroyed 6-3 at Wembley by a visiting Hungarian team lit up by the mercurial skills of Ferenc Puskas. The two adversaries became great friends and were back together at Molineux in December, 1993, when Wolves played a friendly against Honved. And, of course, the duo weren\'t shy about joining in with a sing-song!$ $As Wolves fans head down the M1 to Watford today, here\'s a happy reminder of when the club used to play regularly - and win - at Arsenal. Derek Dougan is pictured challenging his Northern Ireland colleague Terry Neill in March, 1968, on an afternoon when Ronnie Allen\'s side won 2-0 at Highbury. The goals came from John Holsgrove and Frank Wignall, the points providing some of the impetus with which the club would secure their top-flight survival.$ $Three Wolves players and a Wolves fan....Molineux midfield trio Willie Carr, Kenny Hibbitt and Steve Daley form a formidable barrier in the 0-0 Second Division draw at Craven Cottage early in 1976-77. Taking aim, in his inimitable style, is George Best, a boyhood Wolves supporter and particular admirer of Peter Broadbent. The Manchester United legend was by then playing for Fulham, who were despatched 5-2 in the return later in the season as Sammy Chung\'s team stormed to the title and promotion at the first time of asking.$ $Bernard Shaw takes evasive action as defender Bobby Moncur clears his lines in Wolves\' 3-2 home victory over Newcastle 38 years ago this month. Like Wolves\' storming start to 2008-09, wins and goals were coming with a rush, this success over the Magpies - secured by goals from Mike Bailey, Bobby Gould and Dave Wagstaffe - bringing the club a fifth consecutive League victory in a run in which they had scored 14 goals. Another conquest followed when Manchester City were sent packing 3-0 the following week.$ $Three grand old men of Molineux are captured in this picture from their twilight years. Stan Cullis, the finest manager in Wolves\' history, is flanked by Dicky Dorsett #left# and Billy Wright on the August day in 1992 on which Cullis cut the ribbon and opened the new stand in his name. How proud the trio would have been to see their club riding so high in the early weeks of 2008-09 and hinting at a return to the big time. An affectionate look at Cullis\' life and times has been supplied by www.wolvesheroes.com for use in the next edition of the fast-growing football nostalgia magazine, Backpass.$ $This being the week of a reunion dinner of Wolves\' team of Sherpa Van Trophy winners from 20 years ago, it\'s time to become all nolstalgic again about Wembley \'88 and all that. A few weeks ago on this site, we carried a stirring picture of Robbie Dennison\'s clinching second goal in the 2-0 victory over Burnley. Here, we reproduce a photo of the goal that set them on the way - the first-half Andy Mutch header that thrilled the gold and black half #and a bit# of the extraordinary 80,000-plus crowd. Eight Wolves players are in this shot and their hands are about to go up in celebration.$ $As they are now in 2008, Wolves were enjoying the dizzy heights when this photo was taken the small matter of 39 years ago this month. Bill McGarry\'s side had started the season with four wins out of four, all of them exciting goal-laden affairs - against Stoke, Southampton twice and Sheffield Wednesday. The visit of Manchester United brought the run to an end in the shape of a 0-0 draw but there were still almost 51,000 there to witness it. Derek Dougan, with Jim McCalliog and Hugh Curran in the background, carries the fight on this occasion to United, who are represented here by Scottish defender Ian Ure.$ $Stan Cullis\' Wolves press for a breakthrough in their First Division game at Portsmouth in the early weeks of their League Championship defence in 1954. On the move at this Jimmy Mullen corner are fellow forwards Dennis Wilshaw #no 10# and Roy Swinbourne #no 9# while right-half Bill Slater also lends his aerial presence. The more vertically challenged Johnny Hancocks is the no 7. The game, played in a heatwave on August 28 in front of just under 41,000, was drawn 0-0 but Wolves returned to the goal trail two days later by beating Spurs 4-2 - the first of four successive wins in a season in which they finished runners-up.$ $Keeper John Oldfield turns round to see that England midfielder Alan Mullery has gone crashing over him in Wolves\' home game with Tottenham 38 years ago this week. No 3 Derek Parkin is the defender rushing across to clear while Les Wilson looks on in the background. Wolves were beaten 3-0 by their then bogey team but recovered to collect their first points of the season via a 1-0 victory at Coventry three days later. And they progressed superbly to finish fourth in the top flight and qualify for the inaugural UEFA Cup.$ $It\'s 20 years this summer since Wolves highlighted their stay in the lower divisions by winning the Sherpa Van Trophy final against Burnley at Wembley. In front of a remarkable 80,841 crowd that was some 10,000 more than for the previous week\'s England v Scotland game, Andy Mutch gave Wolves a first-half lead, then Robbie Dennison doubled it with this stunning free-kick six minutes after half-time. $Kick-off day is approaching in 2008-09 and Wolves\' trip to Plymouth mirrors the arduous sort of haul they twice had in the opening weekend close on four decades ago.
