What A Run! Have Wetherspoons Ever Had It So Good?

The younger Vitor…..while manager of Fenerbahce in 2016.

Points then pints, evenings in ‘Spoons’ and now all the excited talk of Wolves having the best current record of any top-flight side in Europe’s major leagues…..how much dizzier can this spring become?

Well, even without the chance of another rise in the table this weekend, the incentive of bringing Manchester City down two nights from now is one guaranteed to keep Molineux hearts racing.

The dominant feature of this season-transforming run of six straight wins has been the brilliant way in which Wolves have taken care of languishing sides – namely Southampton, West Ham, Ipswich, Tottenham, Manchester United and Leicester.

Now, though, they have the mouth-watering opportunity to take a massive scalp – that of the winning machine who last spring lifted a fourth consecutive title. And Wolves spirits could not be higher as they make a second Manchester trip in the space of a fortnight.

When we embarked in the middle of the month on this mini series of articles about the revival and records, it was shortly after the jump to 16th place.

They nudged up another spot with the victory at Manchester United and then jumped another couple of rungs by kicking more sand into the faces of doomed Leicester.

Oh yes….does anything highlight this extraordinary lift-off more clearly than the shift in respective fortunes between they and the side who provided the opposition in Vitor Pereira’s first match in charge?

Jim McCalliog – scored in the 3-0 home win against Manchester City in October, 1970.

Had Wolves lost at the King Power Stadium on December 22, they would have trailed the East Midlanders by eight points. Now, having won 3-0 that day and gone pretty much one way since, they head them by the small matter of 23 – an astonishing swing of 28 points.

So what happens next? Well, if Wolves emerge victorious from the Etihad and make it a magnificent seven in a row, we will be back with another piece along these lines next week.

And maybe Vitor will drop in again at the bar he has frequented and been interviewed at in the last week or two. Just a thought…..how late do they stay open on a Friday night?

Footnote: Manchester City were the sixth and final victims when Wolves last strung together six successive top-flight victories – in the autumn of 1970.
