Happy Anniversaries On The Molineux Calendar

As Wolves look ahead to a difficult post-internationals sequence of games against high-riding clubs, two ‘anniversaries’ provide happy memories in their hour of need.

It is seven years today since the club recorded their first-ever Premier League victory – 1-0 at home to Manchester City thanks to a late Colin Cameron header.

City are at Molineux during the last weekend of this month, by which time Mick McCarthy’s side will have made the first of two visits to Old Trafford in quick succession.

On top of the Carling Cup clash of the sides on October 26, they are at Manchester United in the League on Saturday, November 6.

And, 52 years ago today, Stan Cullis’s Wolves buried the Reds 4-0 in a fixture that showed how far the club were ahead of the game.

The visionary Molineux officials had hoped to have the match televised and successfully proposed as a result that it should kick off at 6.30pm.

In the event, permission was denied by the football authorities but it still turned into a happy enough event.

Wolves, by then on the way to a second consecutive League Championship triumph, thrashed Matt Busby’s men 4-0 thanks to goals by Jimmy Murray (2), Bobby Mason and Jimmy Mullen.

The attendance provided a little food for thought, though. It was down on the ‘norm,’ especially for such attractive opponents, at 36,840.

Wolves also beat City 2-0 a week later and completed the double by winning handsomely at Maine Road (4-1) in the February, a week after losing 2-1 at United.
