Tribute To Deano

Spotlight On Defender Who Has Died At 36

We at Wolves Heroes wish to add our condolences to the family and friends of Dean Richards following the desperately sad news today that he has passed away.

The announcement that he had lost his battle with serious illness cast a shadow over Molineux before the vital 4-0 Premier League victory over Blackpool.

No-one at the ground was more moved than his mid-1990s team-mate Robbie Dennison, who was too upset to carry out his usual summarising duties for Beacon Radio.

Fans chanted Richards’ name both early in the game and late on as Wolves produced a performance he would have been delighted with.

A suitable tribute to him is being planned by Molineux officials for next Sunday when Wolves are at home to another of his former clubs, Tottenham.

And we have posted a full piece about him in the Obituaries area of this site.

The defender was signed by Graham Taylor from Bradford City in the spring of 1995, initially on loan but then for a club record fee of around £1.8m.

He also won England under-21 honours and captained that side and Wolves before moving on to Southampton.

Finally gracing the Premier League stage he had been born for, he was bought for £8.1m from Tottenham in 2001 but had to retire through ill health four years later.

He had more recently spent time coaching youngsters back at Bradford City but his health had deteriorated over the winter and he was admitted to a hospice in Leeds earlier this month.
