Pride And Sadness After Full-Back’s Passing

In case you don’t automatically go looking in our Obituaries area at this sad time, please be aware that that is where we have published our lengthy appreciation of the life and career of Gerry Harris.

The tough defender died earlier this week at the age of 84, having spent his final years in a care home at Alveley, on the road between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.

Gerry wasn’t one of the 1950s greats who we saw too much of, even following the formation of the Wolves Former Players Association in 1988, but he remained fondly in the affections of those who played with him or simply watched him from the stands and terraces.

Full-backs don’t always capture the headlines but the 270 League and cup matches he played for Wolves spanned a truly epic period for the club in which they were First Division champions twice and very nearly three times in a row.

No man, not a single one, played more Division One matches for the club in these three campaigns, so we are talking here about one of the true mainstays of Stan Cullis’s greatest side.

On top of that, he played in every game as Wolves won the 1959-60 FA Cup and in two Charity Shields as well as countless glamour fixtures against the might of Europe and beyond.

We at Wolves Heroes again send our deepest condolences to Gerry’s family and are delighted to at least have a platform to do justice to some of his wonderful deeds.

We also plan to write more about him over the coming weeks as we come to terms with now having Ron Flowers as the sole survivor from the Wolves team who beat Blackburn at Wembley 60 years ago.
