They Won’t Forget Ernie!

Fond Tales Aplenty About Promotion-Winning Star

It was a great pleasure to work with Ernie Hunt on his book and I’d like to share some of those moments we enjoyed along the way. His career is well documented, so I will restrict that part of this article to a short precis.

New Home, New Routines

Derek On Duty – But At Wolves First, Not Everton!

Derek Mountfield is relishing the thought of his first Premier League visit to Everton’s spectacular new home – while looking forward to coming to the Merseysiders’ game at Wolves in the meantime. The goal-scoring centre-half attended the Hill Dickinson Stadium dress rehearsal at the pre-season friendly against Roma but was not present for the 2-0 victory over Brighton two days ago.

Sundy Best!

Island Meet-Up With Double Wembley Hero

Alan Sunderland has received a surprise visit on his sunshine isle – from someone eager to learn more about his life in Wolverhampton and South Yorkshire. Barnsley Chronicle sports-writer Ashley Ball, author of the forthcoming Feeding The Wolves book that we have written about on here more than once, kindly sent us photos of their meet-up as they whiled away a few hours together.

Wolves Outlook Was Briefly Dimmer for ‘Jack’

Hancocks’ Heroics Had Some Down-Turns, Too

May 18, 1946. A very short, barely noticeable piece on page seven of the Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News was headlined: “Hancocks Goes to Wolves.” It stated that Oakengates native “Jack Hancocks, one of the best wingers in football today, has been transferred from Walsall to Wolves at a record transfer fee for the Saddlers.”

The Classiest Of Tributes

Tears And Pride As Tragic Brothers Are Celebrated

Rarely has there been pride like this in a defeat of such margins. Wolves, beaten 4-0 at home, reached full-time and beyond with the non-stop chanting of their fans in their ears. It would have been lovely if the vocal support had been in appreciation of a stirling team performance rather than as a reaction to tragic close-season events.

Wolves v City: A Predictable Opening Salvo

Familiar First-Day Foes In Town

Rayan Ait-Nouri no doubt has better things to do with his time than to submerge himself in the record books. If he had had a strong interest in the archives, though, he might have started to suspect that he wouldn’t be kept waiting too long for his first Molineux return. Since the Second World War, no team have been in opening-day opposition to Wolves more often than Saturday’s visitors.

Goodbye To A Legend Who Took Life To The Limit

Evocative Words At Funeral Of Brian Owen

Even in death, colourful stories about Brian Owen continue to emerge. Such as arriving home the worse for wear in the company of Sven Goran Eriksson and being given short shrift by Ron Atkinson when going to visit him in hospital.

Heading South

Big Step That Makes Island-Hopping Easier

First Knotty Ash with Ken Dodd as the family’s coalman, then Wolverhampton and surrounds, now Devon. John McAlle, who knows a thing or two about loyalty to an area and to a football club, has uprooted close to the coast with his wife, Jill.

Dear Diary Entry 166

He’s Here, He’s There….And On The Move Again

Sunday, July 6: Good luck to Alex Rae in his new role as assistant head coach to Partick. The 55-year-old will be working at the Scottish second-tier club under Mark Wilson and it’s appropriate that news of his recent appointment was relayed to us by Glasgow-based Wolves fanatic Gwilym Machin.

An Audience With Mick

Memories Aplenty Down In McCarthy Country

Quite what Mick McCarthy made of us turning up on his patch for a pre-season friendly is hard to say. He was not going to Bromley’s home game against his former club, Millwall, preferring the thought of hitting some balls at his local golf course instead.
Football people have generally been to the venues they want to go to at his time of life and are happy to leave the practice of ground-hopping to others.
