Final Farewell For Fergie
Posh Comments Make New Curtain Call Unlikely
‘Never say never’ is one of football’s frequently quoted maxims – but it is tempting to assume Darren Ferguson’s amazing affiliation with Peterborough is over at last. In stark contrast to his father, who served as Manchester United manager across an unbroken span of 27 years, the former Wolves midfielder has moved into and then out of London Road office no fewer than four times.
Dear Diary Entry 169
‘Supermac’ Back In Scoring Routine
Saturday, October 4: Kevin McDonald, who turns 37 in the first week of November, hit the only goal of the game as Exeter won at Lincoln today to end a run of five straight defeats. It was the Scot’s first appearance on the score-sheet for three seasons.
‘Complex, Charming, Chaotic – My Friend, The Doog’
New Reminiscenses About Fans’ Favourite
June 24, 2007 was a Sunday and my wife Linda and I were looking forward to the arrival of The Doog and his charming partner, Merlyn. I popped out in the morning for last-minute supplies and, on returning, was told by Linda in a trembling voice: “Merlyn’s been on the phone. It’s Derek….he’s had a heart attack.”
A Long Story Of Success
Flowers’s Record On The Line
Matt Doherty is in sight of an obscure piece of Molineux history if he can rediscover his knack for coming up with vital goals. The Irishman has been one of the freer-scoring Wolves defenders across the decades with his 33 goals for the club to date – a total that is all the more impressive for the fact he has never been seen as a penalty specialist.
Scouts’ Honour
Precious Insight Into Talent-Spotters Of Yesteryear
An article in the Daily Express on August 23, 1960 was headlined “On Parade. The men who make Wolves”. The piece was accompanied by a photo showing the scouts from up and down the British Isles credited with bringing the raw talent to Molineux. Dead centre, of course – and surprisingly the only one not looking at the camera (maybe Stan Cullis was lurking!) – was George Noakes. Cited as the only full-timer and the ‘master-spotter’ of the Black Country, Wanderers’ chief scout was quoted as saying: “Some (of our scouts) are on retainers, the rest just get their expenses and we look after them when they find a player.”
Back On The Treadmill
Pals Pleased To Return To The Dug-Out
They were dressing-room mates at Wolves more than 35 years ago and then backroom colleagues at Leicester for several seasons. Now, Rob Kelly and Mike Stowell have returned to work in quick succession at opposite ends of the country after beginning to wonder whether their time in the dug-out was drawing towards a close.
A Hero Returns
Gould Back Among Cup-Happy Dons
Bobby Gould has used a weekend shrouded in FA Cup interest to make another visit to Wimbledon. The man who led The Dons to the ultimate shock triumph against Liverpool in the 1988 final relished his walk-on role at Saturday’s League One home game against Port Vale.
So WHO Is Wolves’ Oldest Scorer?
Revealing Molineux’s Most Senior Marksmen…
It’s all James Milner’s fault. Had he not scored for Brighton earlier this season, our deep dive into the record books may never have been considered. It would, at least, have been substantially delayed. But by netting the equaliser against Manchester City in August and setting The Seagulls on the way to an unlikely home victory, Milner attracted all manner of publicity.
Head Cook Seeks Calm Amid The Heat
Unusual Goings-On At The Top
Nothing surprises you in football, or so the saying goes. Well, actually, some developments do – and this one definitely did. Paul Cook waves his no 2 off to pastures new on Friday, September 12, and no doubt keeps an eye on developments when his long-time right-hand man takes the managerial reins on a match-day for the first time.
Down To Earth With A Bump
Surman Sky-Dives For Best Of Causes
Following Geoff Palmer’s charity abseil last month, another former Wolves player has demonstrated a daring defiance of any fear of heights.
Andrew Surman is at the opposite end of the Molineux service scale to the veteran full-back, having made only nine first-team appearances here following his recruitment by Mick McCarthy in the summer of 2009.
